Rio de Janeiro City Council has the largest female representation in the last decade after the swearing-in of alternates.
With the arrival of three more women from the PT and PSOL parties, the legislative body now has a record number of 11 female councilors.
Brazil of Fact - Last Thursday (2), the Rio de Janeiro City Council swore in six new councilors in the vacancies left by parliamentarians who took up positions as federal deputies in Brasília. With the arrival of three more women in the Rio parliament, the house now has 11 female councilors. It is the largest female bench of the decade.
The number of women is the highest since the 8th legislature (2008-2011) when a total of 13 female councilors took office. With this appointment, the PSOL women's caucus is the largest in the current Rio de Janeiro legislature.
Luciana Novaes (PT), Luciana Boiteux (PSOL), Monica Cunha (PSOL), Edson Santos (PT), Jorge Pereira (Avante) and Alexandre Beça (PSD) took office. They are taking the seats of the federal deputies sworn in last Monday (1st) Lindbergh Farias (PT), Tarcísio Motta (PSOL), Chico Alencar (PSOL), Reimont (PT), Luciano Vieira (PL) and the current Secretary of State for Youth and Healthy Aging.
The ceremony in the Plenary Hall of the Pedro Ernesto Palace was also marked by a minute of silence in honor of journalist Glória Maria.
Women in politics
In the PSOL party's caucus, the newly elected councilwomen Luciana Boiteux, who obtained 8.909 votes for the party in the 2020 election, and Monica Cunha, who received 7.253 votes, will replace Tarcísio Motta and Chico Alencar.
Professor Luciana Boiteux from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) highlighted that the fight for public education will be one of her main priorities in the Chamber. "We have the largest network of schools in Latin America, and we want to support the struggle of education workers, a struggle that is also female, because the majority of professionals in this field are women," she stated.
Monica Cunha, who is serving her first term as a city councilor, became emotional when remembering her son, Rafael da Silva Cunha, who was murdered at the age of 20. In her speech, she said that her term will focus on policies based on justice, well-being, and combating racism. "I am a Black woman who has turned grief into struggle, and that is what I will do within this House," she said.
In addition to Monica and Luciana, the seats previously held by Lindbergh Farias and Reimont, both from the PT party, will be filled by Luciana Novaes, who received 15.311 votes for the party in the 2020 election, and Edson Santos, who received 4.468 votes, respectively. Both have served as city councilors in previous legislatures.
Other changes
With the departure of Luciano Vieira (PL), councilman Jorge Pereira (Avante) returns to the Pedro Ernesto Palace. He received 5.021 votes for his party in the last municipal election.
The seat previously held by congresswoman Laura Carneiro (PSD) was definitively filled by councilman Prof. Célio Lupparelli (Independent), who obtained 5.540 votes. He, who was already in office, assumed the seat of Alexandre Isquierdo, the current State Secretary of Youth and Healthy Aging. His substitute, Alexandre Beça (PSD), who received 3.494 votes in 2020, has been confirmed as a councilman.
