Cabral wants new testimony from money launderers.
The defense team for former governor Sérgio Cabral has asked Judge Marcelo Bretas to order money launderers Renato and Marcelo Chebar, Vinicius Claret (known as "Juca Bala"), and Claudio de Souza to provide new testimonies in one of the cases targeting the politician. Lawyer Rodrigo Rocca argues that a re-examination is necessary after Vinicius Claret and Claudio de Souza stated in their plea bargain agreements that lawyer Figueiredo Basto received a monthly payment of US$50 for seven years (2006 to 2013).
Rio 247 - The defense team for former governor Sérgio Cabral, imprisoned for a year and a half as part of the Lava Jato operation in Rio de Janeiro, has asked Judge Marcelo Bretas of the 7th Federal Court to order money launderers Renato and Marcelo Chebar, Vinicius Claret (known as "Juca Bala"), and Claudio de Souza to provide new testimonies in one of the cases targeting the politician.
Attorney Rodrigo Rocca argues that a re-examination is necessary after Vinicius Claret and Claudio de Souza stated, in their plea bargain agreements, that attorney Figueiredo Basto received a monthly payment of US$50 for seven years (2006 to 2013). According to the testimonies, the payment guaranteed members of illicit schemes protection from the Federal Public Prosecutor's Office and the Federal Police.
"The issue is that the information regarding the relationship between the lawyer for the accused (Vinícius, Claudio, and the Chebar brothers), Dr. Figueiredo Basto, combined with the dynamics and circumstances in which, according to the new informants, the terms and documents relating to the plea bargains that have repercussions in this case were produced, now warrant the reopening of the investigation phase for a new hearing of the individuals mentioned in the new documents," wrote Rocca.
