C&A Modas will have to pay R$ 8 in damages for moral harm to a customer who was verbally assaulted by an employee in a store in Rio de Janeiro. The decision was made by the 5th Civil Chamber of the Court of Justice.
According to the customer's account, she presented her ID to apply for a store card, but the document was not accepted. The store supervisor stated that it was a fake document.
In the presence of other people, the employee tore up the customer's ID and demanded she present another document. During the commotion, the customer was called a "crioula" (a derogatory term for a Black woman) and a "macaca" (a derogatory term for a Black woman). The customer was escorted out of the store under a cordon of security guards. The retail chain denied the incident but failed to provide evidence to support its claim.
