247 - Mayor Bruno Covas (PSDB) was urged by the São Paulo Public Prosecutor's Office to implement a plan to create 8 shelter spaces for homeless people during the coronavirus pandemic. The recommendation was a victory for Guilherme Boulos, federal deputy Luiza Erundina (PSOL-SP), and Father Júlio Lancellotti.

The proposal includes the use of the city's hotel network and vacant municipal public buildings.

A report from the newspaper O Estado de S. Paulo The report highlights that "the Municipal Government's Public Notice provided for the availability of 500 hotel rooms for homeless elderly people who are sheltered in the municipality's social assistance network. According to the Public Prosecutor's Office, the offer is 'timid and clearly insufficient,' given that there are approximately 25 homeless people throughout the capital, according to a census conducted in 2019."

The prosecutor's office stated that "of these, approximately 17.000 are currently occupied, which are the available spaces according to the same census (...) Considering the spread of the virus and the high risk of contagion among the homeless population, it is necessary for the Municipal Government to adopt emergency measures, even if temporary, aimed at providing spaces for all homeless people. It is therefore necessary to urgently provide for the creation of at least 8 spaces."
