Association of police officers and firefighters recommends cancellation of New Year's Eve celebrations in Rio.
The Association of Active and Retired Military Officers of the Military Police and Fire Department of the State of Rio de Janeiro (Aomai) recommended, through an open letter to Governor Luiz Fernando Pezão and Mayor Eduardo Paes, "the cancellation of artistic and pyrotechnic shows in the municipality of Rio de Janeiro" during the New Year's Eve celebrations. According to the association, there is a risk of demonstrations "which, due to their scale and the number of people involved, could escalate into violence and threaten the safety of the public present" at the events.
247 - The Association of Active and Retired Military Officers of the Military Police and Fire Department of the State of Rio de Janeiro (Aomai) recommended, through an open letter to Governor Luiz Fernando Pezão and Mayor Eduardo Paes, "the cancellation of artistic and pyrotechnic shows in the municipality of Rio de Janeiro" during the New Year's celebrations.
According to the association, there is a risk of demonstrations "that, due to their scale and the number of people involved, could take on violent proportions and threaten the safety of the population present" at the events, especially at the traditional celebration on Copacabana Beach in the South Zone.
In the document, Aomai emphasizes that the current political and financial crisis—which has caused serious financial losses to public servants and military personnel—could result in protests against the State Government, similar to those that have been occurring for about a year. The organization highlights that similar situations were observed during the World Cup in Rio.
