Supporters of former Bolsonaro-aligned secretary arrested for prison rise to command of the Rio Civil Police.
Bolsonaro supporter Allan Turnowski was arrested on charges of belonging to a criminal organization and involvement with illegal gambling.
247 - Some of the main supporters of the Bolsonaro-supporting police chief and former Secretary of the Civil Police of Rio de Janeiro, Allan Turnowski, arrested on charges of belonging to a criminal organization and involvement with illegal gambling, held high-ranking positions within the institution, according to the newspaper. The Globe.
According to the internal bulletin of the Rio de Janeiro Civil Police, José Pedro Costa da Silva and Felipe Lobato Curi, who campaigned for their former boss—then a candidate for federal deputy—were promoted to leadership positions within the organization.
Curi went to the General Directorate of Specialized Police. He appears in photos at the motorcade held to celebrate the release of the former secretary on September 30th – by decision by Bolsonaro's minister Nunes Marques.
According to O Globo, the police chief is also mentioned in exchanges of Messages recovered from the cell phone of police chief Maurício Demétrio, arrested since June of last year for corruption, criminal association, obstruction of justice, and money laundering or concealment of assets.
Demetrio and Turnowski allegedly discussed a plan to assassinate the illegal gambling boss Rogério de Andrade. The Public Prosecutor's Office indicates that more than 23 messages were intercepted between them, regarding the occupation of strategic positions, the persecution of internal adversaries, and the production of false dossiers on judicial authorities in Rio de Janeiro.
In the intercepted messages, the two engage in a dialogue on September 6, 2020, regarding the arrangements for the succession of the ministry's leadership. Demétrio says: "Cury is a great alternative." And Turnowski replies: "I don't know. I think he's very immature. But he's ours."
The other delegate who rose to the top ranks of the Rio Civil Police, José Pedro, who was in the General Directorate of Interior Police and ascended to the General Directorate of Capital Police, sent messages and videos in WhatsApp groups encouraging his colleagues to vote for Turnowski, who ran for office with the PL, Jair Bolsonaro's party, but was not elected.
Meanwhile, Fernando Albuquerque remains in charge of the Civil Police, and after Turnowski's arrest, he sent a letter to his colleagues stating his belief in the former secretary's innocence.
