247 - At least 64 people died on Tuesday (28) during a police operation that was declared to target organized crime in two community complexes in the northern zone of Rio de Janeiro, the state government reported, quoted by Reuters.
At least 81 people were arrested, including suspects from other states who were allegedly hiding in the capital of Rio de Janeiro. The clashes took place in the favela complexes of Alemão and Penha. The operation is considered by the Rio government to be the largest in history against Comando Vermelho, a criminal faction operating in the region.
Police stated that 50 victims are suspected of being criminals. Two other civilian police officers and two military police officers died in the operation. Since the early morning hours, agents have been attempting to execute 100 arrest warrants and 150 search and seizure warrants. At least 32 rifles were seized.
Governor Cláudio Castro stated that the state is confronting "narcoterrorists" using technology, armored vehicles, aircraft, drones, and the full mobilization of security forces. "All battalions are on alert for possible retaliations," he said.
In total, approximately 2.500 agents and 32 armored vehicles were mobilized in the operation. (With information from Reuters).
