Amnesty International demands results from investigations into Marielle's death and initiates "legal proceedings" in Rio.
Urban intervention marks four years since the death of human rights activist Marielle Franco and demands that the families of Marielle and Anderson have access to the investigation files.
247 - After four years without the investigations into the murders of councilwoman Marielle Franco (PSOL-RJ) and driver Anderson Gomes reaching the perpetrators of the double homicide, Amnesty International will carry out, this Monday (14), an urban intervention with a giant installation over 2 meters high, in front of the City Council, in downtown Rio. The panel simulates the judicial process that is still inconclusive, highlighting the lack of access of the victims' families and their lawyers to information.
“Amnesty International Brazil emphasizes that the Inter-American Court of Human Rights' decision in the Nova Brasília case guarantees the right of access to investigation files, as well as the right to participate and act in all stages of the investigation and criminal proceedings. Therefore, it is our duty to demand that the rights of Marielle and Anderson's families be respected. And today, we have come forward to demand it,” said Jurema Werneck, Executive Director of Amnesty International Brazil.
The proposal, according to Amnesty International, is that the public can have access to the "process" and read fundamental messages about the struggle of the families and civil society organizations for justice for the death of the human rights activist.
“International human rights standards provide for the right to truth and the effective participation of victims and their families in all stages of the investigation process – especially in situations that constitute serious human rights violations, such as the murders of human rights defenders. It is fundamental to combat the leaking of information during investigations, but families and their representatives have the right to participate in all stages of the investigation. Respecting confidentiality does not mean lacking transparency. The lack of justice for the death of a defender generates a terrifying effect on all other people who defend dignity and life. And there are immediate and long-term consequences for the whole of society, as was the case with the murders of Marielle and Anderson,” stated Jurema Werneck.
Throughout the day of March 14th, Amnesty International Brazil, along with the other organizations of the Justice for Marielle and Anderson Committee, will carry out a series of actions. The Committee also includes the following organizations: Marielle Franco Institute, Justiça Global, Black Coalition for Rights, Terra de Direitos, councilwoman and Marielle's partner, Monica Benício, and Agatha Reis, Anderson Gomes' widow.
At 9:00 AM, in front of the Rio de Janeiro State Court of Justice in downtown Rio, the families of Marielle and Anderson will hold a demonstration demanding access to the case files and a resolution to the crime, supported by the committee. At 10:30 AM, a mass will be held for the victims at the Candelária Church. From 4:00 PM to 11:00 PM, the Marielle Franco Institute will host the "Justice for Marielle and Anderson" Festival at Circo Voador, featuring discussion panels and artistic performances. Jessica Ellen, Karol Conka, BK, Marina Iris, Juçara Marçal, Abronca, Doralyce, and Lelle are some of the confirmed acts. At 8:00 PM, there will be a speech by Marielle and Anderson's family members and members of the organizations that make up the committee.
The Committee has also been holding a series of meetings with public decision-makers. On Monday morning (14), the families' lawyers will file a writ of mandamus in the Court of Justice, so that information from the investigation files on the masterminds of the murder can be shared with the victims' families and their lawyers. In the afternoon, at 15 pm, there will be a meeting with the Governor of the State of Rio de Janeiro, Cláudio Castro, who confirmed that he will receive the family and the Committee's entities. Due to this confirmation, the hearing scheduled with the Public Prosecutor's Office, also for Monday, will need to be postponed.
“Four years is too long. We are driven by the disappointment of this long wait, but also by hope. The authorities must perform their duties with transparency to send a firm message that impunity will not be the legacy of the assassination of Marielle and Anderson. And civil society has the right to demand this stance from the public authorities,” emphasized Jurema Werneck.
