247 - At an event promoted by Rede Itatiaia and CNN Brasil, the Minister of Mines and Energy in Lula's (PT) government, Alexandre Silveira (PSD), directly challenged the governor of Minas Gerais, Romeu Zema (Novo), regarding the need for honest, ethical, and transparent mining in the state.

Silveira emphasized that mineral exploration must respect the environment, local communities, and the principles of integrity and public responsibility. "Mining must generate development without compromising ethics, transparency, and probity in public management," the minister stated.

The fine comes amid criticism of Zema's administration, especially regarding environmental oversight and the ethical conduct of mining activities. Recent reports indicate that some decisions by the state government may have favored illegal mining, generating environmental and social impacts.

The minister emphasized the importance of managing the state's natural resources with rigor, responsibility, and integrity. This stance highlights the growing pressure for more responsible state administration in mining in Minas Gerais, one of the state's most important activities.
