247 - The federal government and the state of Pernambuco have reached an agreement to share the management of the Fernando de Noronha archipelago, located about 350 kilometers from Recife. The agreement, which still needs to be ratified by the Supreme Federal Court (STF), puts an end to the project to federalize the administration of the area, which had been advocated by Jair Bolsonaro (PL) since 2020.

According to MetropolisThe agreement, mediated by the Attorney General's Office (AGU), stipulates that the site will be under the care of the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBio), the state of Pernambuco, and the Pernambuco State Environmental Agency (CPRH).

According to the report, the AGU's objective "is to protect the environment and promote cooperation between the federative entities involved, in order to reconcile the administrative, urban planning, and tourism management of the group of islands with the guidelines for the defense of biodiversity, the sustainable use of natural resources, the proper regulation of land use, and territorial planning that protects current and future generations."

The initiative also limits tourist access to the archipelago. Under the new rule, the number of visitors cannot exceed 11 people per month and 132 per year until a new capacity study, with indicators of the site's sustainability, is prepared.
