Brasilia – The Civil Police of Maranhão arrested today (9) three more suspects for participating in the attacks on police stations and buses that occurred last Friday (3), in São Luís, the state capital. One of these attacks resulted in the death of six-year-old Ana Clara, who suffered burns on 95% of her body, and left five others injured. With the arrests this Thursday, the number of people detained on suspicion of participating in acts of violence in the state reaches 21.
After an operation that began on Sunday (5), agents from the Criminal Investigation Superintendency arrested Allan Kardec Dias Costa and Giheliton de Jesus Santos, known as Gil, in the Pará municipality of Santa Maria. The other suspect, known only by the nickname Orelhão, was arrested in São Luís.
According to the Civil Police, they are part of the leadership of the Bonde dos 40 criminal faction, which operates within the Pedrinhas Penitentiary Complex and is believed to be responsible for ordering the attacks in the capital.
The attacks are considered a response by criminals to the changes imposed by the Military Police and the National Public Security Force inside the prison where, according to the National Council of Justice (CNJ), at least 60 prisoners were murdered last year. This year, two inmates have been killed.
