Mayors from Maranhão travel to Brasília seeking adjustments to healthcare funding.

With the goal of increasing the per capita amount transferred by the SUS (Brazilian Public Health System) to cities for healthcare funding, a delegation from the Federation of Municipalities of the State of Maranhão (FAMEM), led by its president Cleomar Tema from Tuntum, will arrive in Brasília tomorrow. Currently, Maranhão, with almost 7 million inhabitants, is the tenth most populous state in Brazil; however, it receives the second-lowest per capita amount in the country. This means it is serving a much smaller population seeking healthcare assistance.

John Cutrim's Blog - With the goal of increasing the per capita amount transferred by the Unified Health System (SUS) to cities to cover healthcare costs, a delegation from the Federation of Municipalities of the State of Maranhão (FAMEM), led by its president Cleomar Tema, from Tuntum, arrives in Brasília tomorrow.

Currently, Maranhão, with almost 7 million inhabitants, is the tenth most populous state in Brazil; however, it receives the second-lowest per capita value in the country. This equates to serving a much smaller population seeking healthcare assistance.

The group, comprised of approximately 70 managers, will meet in the morning with the president of the Chamber of Deputies, Rodrigo Maia (DEM/RJ). The meeting with the Maranhão delegation in Congress, made up of senators and federal deputies, will be at 17 PM. On Wednesday, at 11 AM, a meeting is scheduled with the Minister of Health, Ricardo Barros.

According to federal deputy José Reinaldo (PSB), Piauí, for example, has a population that is less than half that of Maranhão and has a much higher per capita income.

“This fight by FAMEM is very just; it involves all federal and state deputies, and all mayors. This actually represents an improvement in the conditions of healthcare services offered to the population in the municipalities of Maranhão,” he explained.

According to him, the mayors' request is a constant concern for the federal deputies from Maranhão, who have already made some attempts to place the state at least among those that receive the average value of per capita SUS (Brazilian Public Health System) disbursements.
