247 - Former minister and former governor of Ceará, Ciro Gomes (PDT), has once again provoked outrage by launching attacks against the Minister of Education, Camilo Santana (PT), and against the mayor of Crateús (CE), Janaína Farias (PT). The statements were made during a birthday celebration for the former mayor of Fortaleza, Roberto Cláudio (União Brasil), and are circulating on social media.

Shortly after the repercussions, Janaína reacted strongly. “Once again, I am cowardly attacked by Mr. Ciro Gomes, a figure known for morally assaulting people, especially women. He has even been convicted for attacks of this type. A misogynist who, increasingly, in the face of his political failure, seeks to attack people's honor in an irresponsible and reckless manner,” the mayor wrote on her social media, according to [source missing]. reporter from Folha de S. Paulo.

In the video of the event, Ciro accused Janaína Farias of "recruiting poor girls" for Camilo Santana, whom he called a beneficiary of "dirty sexual services." Janaína was the second alternate senator on Camilo's ticket in 2022 and currently heads the city hall of Crateús. This is not the first time the mayor has been the target of attacks from the PDT member. In a decision by Judge Priscila Faria da Silva, of the Court of Justice of the Federal District and Territories (TJDFT), Ciro had already been sentenced to pay R$ 52 for gender-based political violence, after calling her an "advisor on matters of the bedroom."

Ciro stated: “The person who recruited poor, good-looking girls to perform the dirty sexual services of Mr. Camilo Santana became a senator for Ceará and is now the mayor of a municipality in the state. And this is a challenge that my dear friends are calling me to face. Should I face it? I will face it.”

Camilo Santana also responded, stating that he will take legal action. "Ciro Gomes will have to answer for his actions in court, in yet another lawsuit, like so many others he faces, including convictions, for attempting to tarnish people's honor," the Minister of Education said in a statement.

Political context

Ciro's attacks come at a time when he is reconnecting with sectors of the right wing in Ceará. The former minister, who ran for president four times, broke with the PT in 2022 after 16 years of alliance. That year, he supported the candidacy of Roberto Cláudio (at the time in the PDT) for governor of the state, who was defeated in the first round by the PT candidate Elmano de Freitas.

In May 2025, Ciro defended the unity of the Ceará opposition and signaled support for the Senate candidacy of the Bolsonaro-aligned state deputy Alcides Fernandes (PL). Although the PSDB wants him to run for governor in 2026, allies indicate that Ciro is considering supporting Roberto Cláudio again. If he returns to the PSDB, it will be a comeback almost 30 years after he was governor of Ceará and Minister of Finance in the Itamar Franco government for the party.
