247 - Federal deputy Márcio Jerry (PCdoB-MA), deputy leader of the government in the Chamber, was the only federal deputy from the Maranhão delegation to participate, this Sunday (21), in the demonstration in São Luís against the so-called Shielding PEC and the amnesty project for those involved in the acts of January 8.

Approved in the Chamber of Deputies this week, the Shielding PEC expands judicial protection for parliamentarians. The amnesty project had its urgency approved last Wednesday (17), opening the way for voting in plenary. Jerry voted against both proposals and made a point of being present at the event held in the center of the capital of Maranhão.

“The law applies to everyone, and the sovereignty of the people must be respected. It makes no sense to approve a constitutional amendment that will protect politicians, nor to insist on granting amnesty to those responsible for the attacks of January 8th. I join the voices of the people who took to the streets this Sunday; after all, we cannot allow this type of initiative, contrary to the interests of society, to prosper,” he stated.

The demonstrations were called by left-wing movements and also took place in cities such as São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte, Brasília, Salvador, João Pessoa, Maceió, Natal, Teresina, Belém, Manaus, and Cuiabá.
