Maranhão will rename schools with military names.

“Tomorrow, the anniversary of the 1964 coup, we will change the names of schools that allude to the general-dictators. They don't deserve tributes. This Tuesday (31), the date on which the military coup completes 51 years, state schools in Maranhão whose names honor dictators will be renamed by order of Governor Flávio Dino (PCdoB). “Tomorrow, the date of the 1964 coup, we will change the names of schools alluding to the general-dictators. They do not deserve tributes. Dictatorship never again,” said Dino in posts on social media.

The State Department of Education has identified ten educational institutions in nine municipalities in Maranhão that bore the names of former presidents of the military regime. In the capital, São Luís, the Marechal Castelo Branco State School will be renamed the Jackson Lago Unit (after the former governor of the state). In Imperatriz, the former Castelo Branco Teaching Center will become the Vinícius de Moraes Teaching Center. In Timbiras, the school named after former president Emílio Garrastazu Médici will, from today onwards, be called the Paulo Freire Teaching Center.

According to the governor, "the school communities themselves chose new names." He emphasized that, with the report presented at the end of 2014 by the National Truth Commission, it is not "reasonable" for public buildings to continue to honor military personnel who committed serious human rights violations. "The state of Maranhão will no longer honor those responsible for crimes against humanity," he told the Estado de S. Paulo newspaper.
