Lula sends a message to Trump: 'It's not the president of the Republic who will condemn Bolsonaro. It's the Brazilian Supreme Court.'

'Trump is not an emperor. He was elected to take care of the American people. Taking care of Brazil... that's up to us,' said the president.

247 - President Lula (PT) criticized this Thursday (17) the justification given by US President Donald Trump, who announced a 50% tariff on Brazilian exports last 9. In a letter to the PT member, the White House chief defended Jair Bolsonaro and cited the investigation into the coup plot to launch the trade war against Brazil.

“That’s absurd. It’s not the president of the Republic who will condemn Bolsonaro. It’s the Brazilian Supreme Court (Supremo Tribunal Federal). He tried to stage a coup,” Lula stated at an event in Bahia. “He (Trump) is not an emperor. He was elected to take care of the American people. We are the ones who take care of Brazil. The Brazilian people know how to take care of themselves,” he added.

In his speech, the president recalled that, according to investigators of the coup plot, the plan for institutional rupture advocated by Bolsonaro supporters had as one of its objectives the assassination of Lula, Vice President Geraldo Alckmin, and Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes. "There was a plan to kill Lula, Alckmin, and Moraes," the Workers' Party member emphasized.

Currently, Bolsonaro is a defendant in the investigation into the coup plot.
