The Electoral Court of Ceará denied a request for the arrest of former minister Ciro Gomes, who is the target of a lawsuit filed by the Public Prosecutor's Office for gender-based political violence against former senator and current mayor of Crateús (CE), Janaína Carla Farias (PT).

The decision was handed down this Sunday (14) by Judge Victor Nunes Barroso, of the 115th Electoral Zone of Fortaleza. The arrest was requested by the Senate's Legal Department, which is defending Janaína in the case.

Despite rejecting the arrest request, the judge prohibited Ciro Gomes from making insults or any insulting or defamatory remarks against the mayor, directly or indirectly.

In case of non-compliance, the politician will have to pay a fine of R$10 per post or statement.

"Taking into account the circumstances of the specific case, I consider it necessary to impose a precautionary measure other than imprisonment, which is sufficient and adequate, namely: prohibition of mentioning the name of the victim Janaína Carla Farias, even indirectly, in public or private pronouncements of a public nature (meetings, interviews, events, etc.) or in posts on social media," the judge ruled.

Ciro Gomes began responding to the process in July 2024. In an interview, Ciro said that Janaína Farias, who held the position of senator, acted as a “bedside aide” to the Minister of Education, Camilo Santana (PT-CE).

A Agency Brazil contacted Ciro Gomes's defense team and is awaiting a response. The space is open for comment.
