Governments of Ceará, Bahia, and Maranhão ignore Bolsonaro's decree regarding beauty salons and gyms.
The governors of Ceará, Camilo Santana (PT), Bahia, Rui Costa (PT), and Maranhão, Flávio Dino (PCdoB), have announced that they will ignore Jair Bolsonaro's decree, which expands essential services to include gyms and beauty salons.
247 - Camilo Santana (PT), Rui Costa (PT), and Flávio Dino (PCdoB), governors of Ceará, Bahia, and Maranhão respectively, announced that they will ignore Jair Bolsonaro's decree, which expands essential services to include gyms and beauty salons, and will maintain social isolation measures to combat the new coronavirus pandemic.
"I inform you that, despite the president issuing a decree considering beauty salons, barbershops, and gyms as essential services, this act in NO WAY alters the current state decree in force in Ceará, and they must remain closed. This is in accordance with the understanding of the Supreme Federal Court," warned Camilo Santana, referring to the Court's decision that reaffirmed that states and municipalities have autonomy to determine their own social isolation rules.
Bolsonaro criticized the Supreme Court's position and, last week, went to the Court accompanied by business leaders to press for the relaxation of social isolation measures.
Governor Rui Costa echoed Camilo's sentiments. "Bahia will ignore this. We will maintain our responsible work standards. The goal is to save lives," he stated.
"All legal measures will be taken to maintain isolation," the governor emphasized. Bahia has more than 200 deaths and 5,7 confirmed cases of Covid-19.
Flávio Dino stated that in Maranhão "nothing changes until the 20th," meaning that the isolation measures remain in place.
"Bolsonaro should be concerned with the truly essential activity that falls to him to take care of, that of President of the Republic, and start exercising it seriously," he criticized.
