John Cutrim's Blog - The Maranhão delegation in the National Congress secured another victory for the state. According to the delegation's coordinator and federal deputy, Rubens Júnior (PCdoB), during a meeting with parliamentarians, this Tuesday (03), President Michel Temer guaranteed the release of R$ 15 million for the continuation of works carried out by the National Institute of Historical and Artistic Heritage (Iphan) in São Luís.
Rubens Junior explained that, with the commitment made by Temer to the Parliamentary Group, the start of the Rua Grande project is guaranteed, including Praça Deodoro, a great dream for the capital of Maranhão, considered a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. “Work will also resume on the Arthur Azevedo and João do Vale theaters, the Museum of Visual Arts, the University Forum, Jucema, and the Palácio das Lágrimas,” the parliamentarian detailed.
During the meeting, Michel Temer also guaranteed that he would allocate funds for other Iphan projects in 2018, thus ensuring the continuation of ongoing works. Seven federal deputies, the vice-governor of Maranhão, Carlos Brandão, and representatives from the Maranhão Commercial Board (Jucema), the Maranhão Civil Construction Industry Union (Sinduscon-MA), the São Luís Chamber of Store Managers (CDL), Fiema, and the Commercial Association participated in the meeting. “All together for São Luís and for Maranhão. This is how the Maranhão federal delegation acts in Congress,” said the delegation coordinator, Rubens Júnior.
Union of efforts
Last month, the coordinator of the Parliamentary Group received the president of the Construction Industry Union of the State of Maranhão (Sinduscon-MA), Fábio Nahuz, who, on behalf of the Chamber of Retail Leaders of São Luís (CDL), requested an intervention with Iphan.
According to Nahuz, the CDL (Chamber of Shopkeepers) was surprised by the news of the suspension of the works, which directly affected the continuity of the Urban Redevelopment Project of Rua Grande, one of the oldest aspirations of the retail sector. "This is a possible solution to promote the total economic and social revitalization of that area, which will provide benefits not only to the retail sector, but also to tourism, and to the population as a whole," he said.
The federal deputy also visited the CDL headquarters in São Luís to meet with the organization's president, Fábio Henrique Ribeiro, to delve deeper into the topic and detail the requests. Rubens Júnior reinforced the caucus's commitment to defending the realization of the projects. "We will mobilize all parliamentarians to once again work together for the benefit of Maranhão. It is necessary for the Federal Government to secure resources for these projects," he stated at the time.
The following week, the delegation met with the president of the National Institute of Historical and Artistic Heritage (Iphan), Kátia Bogéa, to discuss the implementation of the PAC Historic Cities works in Maranhão.
Kátia Bogéa praised Rubens Júnior's initiative in convening the meeting to closely monitor the status of the PAC Historic Cities projects. “Iphan has been working with the support of the State Government, the Municipality of São Luís, and the Federal University of Maranhão (UFMA). We have already supported the city with R$ 8 million for project development, and now we need to overcome this difficult period that the country and the Federal Government are facing and secure funding to carry out these works,” she said.
