A 13-year-old boy was attacked by a shark on a beach in Olinda, in the Greater Recife area.
Figures released by the State Committee for Monitoring Shark Incidents (Cemit) have already recorded 82 attacks.
247 - A 13-year-old teenager was attacked by a shark this Thursday (29), on Del Chifre beach, in Olinda, in the Metropolitan Region of Recife. The boy was taken to the Tricentenário Hospital, which is also located in the municipality. As of now, there was no official information about the teenager's state of health.
Figures released by the State Committee for Monitoring Shark Incidents (Cemit) recorded 82 shark attacks since 1992, when incidents began to be counted. 67 were recorded in the Recife Metropolitan Region (RMR) and 14 in Fernando de Noronha. There were 27 deaths in total.
The areas with the highest concentration of incidents are located in the neighborhoods of Boa Viagem, in Recife, with 24 recorded incidents, and Piedade, in Jaboatão dos Guararapes, which has 23 occurrences. Del Chifre beach, in Olinda, follows, with five attacks recorded so far.
Data from Cemit also indicate a seasonal variation in the records. The months with the highest number of incidents are July, with 11 cases, March, with nine, and May, with eight occurrences. The statistics reinforce the constant attention of the authorities to the monitoring of the coastline and to the rapid assistance to victims in cases of attack.
