Former congressman remains in an induced coma after accident in Natal.

247 - Former federal deputy Rafael Motta (PSB-RN), 39, remains hospitalized in stable condition after suffering a kitesurfing accident in Natal last Friday (22). According to information released by MetropolisHe is intubated and in an induced coma at Vila Nova Star Hospital in São Paulo, where he was transferred in an air ambulance over the weekend.

Before being transferred to the capital of São Paulo, Motta underwent thoracic surgery at the Monsenhor Walfredo Gurgel Hospital in Natal to repair a bronchial injury. The medical report stated that the procedure was uneventful and that the patient maintained hemodynamic stability throughout the intervention.

In addition to the bronchial injury, which has already been repaired, doctors also diagnosed fractures in the spine, sternum, and forearm. Despite the severity of the injuries, the statement highlighted that there was no spinal cord damage and that movement in the lower limbs remains preserved.

The accident occurred near Forte dos Reis Magos, one of the main landmarks of the capital of Rio Grande do Norte. The politician, a frequent practitioner of water sports, used to share images of his training sessions on the coast of Rio Grande do Norte on his social media. In March, he even wrote that "RN is the Hawaii of kitesurfing in the world".

Rafael Motta began his political career as a city councilor in Natal, between 2013 and 2014, and was elected federal deputy in 2014, serving until 2022. In the same year, he ran for the Senate and, in 2024, he ran for mayor of the capital of Rio Grande do Norte.
