Brasilia - President Dilma Rousseff will meet today with the Minister of Justice, José Eduardo Cardozo. The meeting is scheduled for 15 pm at the Planalto Palace.

They must assess the unfolding crisis in the Maranhão prison system. Another issue to be discussed is the illegal entry of new Haitians into Acre, through the border with Peru.

On Wednesday (15), a judicial task force began a survey on the situation of prisoners in the Pedrinhas Penitentiary Complex. Five rooms were reserved in the São Luís Forum for the work, which brings together 22 judges, 28 public prosecutors and 21 public defenders from the state.

The goal is to identify those who are temporarily detained or who have already served their sentences and can be released. The task force also aims to survey prisoners considered less dangerous, who may receive alternative sentences or be released on parole with the use of electronic monitoring.

The crisis in the Maranhão prison system culminated in the death of a child and injuries to four people after criminals set fire to buses in São Luís. The order for the attacks came from inside the Pedrinhas Penitentiary, where two rival factions are fighting for control of the prison.
