The Northeast Consortium is working with Lula to take measures against Trump's tariff hikes.
Northeastern governors will present Lula with a mapping of the economic impacts of US taxation and will seek to open new markets.
247 - The Northeast Consortium has intensified dialogue with the federal government to try to shield the region's productive sectors from the effects of the so-called "tariff hike" promised by US President Donald Trump, which will come into effect next Friday (1), reports the newspaper. The Globe.
The agenda of the northeastern governors is centered in Brasília, where they will participate, next Tuesday (5), in the meeting of the Council for Sustainable Economic and Social Development — the Conselhão — alongside President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT). The meeting will discuss, among other topics, the implications of the new tariffs imposed by the United States on Brazilian products, with a special focus on the states of the Northeast. Following this, a General Assembly of the Northeast Consortium will be held.
On Wednesday (6), state leaders are expected to meet at the Planalto Palace with President Lula, Vice President and Minister of Development, Industry, Trade and Services, Geraldo Alckmin (PSB), and the Minister of the Secretariat of Institutional Relations, Gleisi Hoffmann (PT), to discuss strategies to address the tariff impact.
The Northeast Consortium, chaired by the governor of Piauí, Rafael Fonteles, has been maintaining direct dialogue with ApexBrasil (Brazilian Agency for the Promotion of Exports and Investments) and the Ministry of Development. As part of this mobilization, it presented a detailed technical survey, with estimates of economic losses, affected products and companies, and breakdowns by state and sector.
The group's main objective is to secure federal support to mitigate the economic damage caused by the American measure, while simultaneously seeking to strengthen the international presence of products from Northeast Brazil. Among the proposals are the diversification of target markets, the expansion of the export network, and the mapping of new trade routes capable of absorbing the losses caused by the increase in US tariffs.
