Cities in Bahia lost 100% of their vaccines in the flood, says Rui Costa.

247 - The governor of Bahia, Rui Costa (PT), reported this Tuesday (28) that several municipalities in the south of Bahia lost all medications and vaccines during the serious floods and flooding that hit the region.

The statement was made in a live broadcast on the governor's social media. The Workers' Party member stated that the Bahia State Health Department (Sesab) is closely monitoring the situation and reported that the replenishment of materials is urgent. "In some places, 100% of all medication and vaccines were lost because some municipal health departments and medicine depots were completely underwater. This is the case in Jucuruçu and other cities."

"Yesterday [Monday, 27th], I went to Itororó and the ground floor of the city hall was completely flooded, including a health post that lost all its vaccines. At this moment, it's about replenishing medications, vaccines, and medical supplies as quickly as possible," Costa continued.

The governor highlighted that monitoring is being carried out to monitor the possible emergence of diseases caused by the floods, such as leptospirosis.

"We have a natural disaster, and we have two pandemics [epidemics] happening at the same time: the coronavirus pandemic, and this flu virus that has plagued the entire country and also Bahia. Therefore, the attention and action of doctors is fundamental. I am not a specialist, I don't know the names of all the endemic diseases, but some appear, such as the disease caused by rat urine, by rat feces, which at this time of flooding spreads in the water. (...) So, people need to be very careful not to ingest this floodwater under any circumstances. Some people who were directly involved in rescuing others, some people who were leaving their homes, may have ingested some of this water, so we are reinforcing the supply of medicines to these cities."
