Caema will invest R$ 14 million in sanitation for the lagoon and beaches.

The Environmental Sanitation Company (Caema) announced an investment of over R$ 14 million for sanitation works to raise the sewage treatment level in São Luís from 4% to 70% by the end of 2018, through the "More Sanitation" program. "Taking care of sanitation is ensuring that people have a better quality of life and the certainty that the environment will be protected. The launch of the "Mais Saneamento" (More Sanitation) program was marked by cultural presentations, a cycling tour, a craft fair, and musical performances that filled Sunday morning at Lagoa da Jansen and Litorânea. Governor Flávio Dino participated in the cycling tour and received a warm welcome from skateboarders at Lagoa da Jansen. The champion athletes of the Maranhão School Games in handball, students from Barbosa de Godois, also participated in the event, along with council members, state and municipal secretaries.

The construction of more than 40 pumping stations, two large sewage treatment plants, the expansion of existing plants, and the drilling of public roads to install sewer networks are some of the actions made possible by the State Government for the coming years in Maranhão. "Taking care of sanitation means ensuring that people have a better quality of life and the certainty that the environment will be protected. All of this attracts tourists and these are projects that generate jobs and income," said the director of the Maranhão Environmental Sanitation Company (Caema), Davi Telles.

The project to clean up the Pimenta and Claro rivers alone includes the installation of a new 4.135-meter-long pipeline system along the banks, as well as the construction of a pumping station and over 30 meters of sewage collection networks in the region. Works worth R$ 306 million are underway for four major sewage systems in the city. The forecast is that by the end of 2016, all 27 existing sewage points along the Jansen Lagoon will be eliminated, and all the bathing water quality indicators for São Luís beaches will be restored.
