247 - An Airbus A321neo operated by Azul Linhas Aéreas had to declare an emergency on Monday night (27) when approaching Recife International Airport. The aircraft, which was operating flight AD2820 departing from Guarulhos, in São Paulo, experienced a technical failure in a crucial part for landing and takeoff operations, the slat, according to the newspaper. The Globe.

The slat, a component located on the leading edge of the wings, plays a vital role in increasing lift at low speeds. This device allows the aircraft to operate at higher angles of attack without the risk of stalling, a situation in which lift is lost. In the event of a failure, such as the one recorded during the flight, the pilot may have difficulty identifying the actual position of the part, which can lead to improper settings and jeopardize the safety of the operation.

Faced with the malfunction, the pilot declared "pan-pan" to air traffic control. This term is used for urgent situations that, while requiring immediate attention, do not pose an imminent risk to life or the integrity of the aircraft. The emergency was reported due to the need for additional support during the descent procedure.

The commander reported that the aircraft had nine minutes of fuel remaining to decide between continuing to Recife or diverting to the alternate airport in Maceió, Alagoas. The operation was conducted cautiously, and safety protocols were followed to ensure a safe landing.

To date, Azul Linhas Aéreas has not provided any further clarification regarding the incident.
