UnB will host the launch of 'Chronicles of Resistance 2016'.

A debate at the University of Brasília (UnB) between authors, professors and representatives of student and social movements will mark, next Friday (26), the launch of the book 'Chronicles of Resistance 2016 - Narratives of a threatened democracy'; on the back cover, signed by Leonardo Boff, the writer says that "Noam Chomsky, who lives with a Brazilian woman, rightly said it is 'a gang of thieves accusing an innocent woman, against whom there is not even evidence of a crime'. This gang joined forces with the chief conspirator, Vice President Michel Temer, with sectors of the STF itself, complicit and negligent, with the PF and the MP to escape unscathed from their crimes and save their political careers"

Brasilia 247 - A debate at the University of Brasília (UnB) between authors, professors and representatives of student and social movements will mark the launch of the book 'Chronicles of Resistance 2016 - Narratives of a threatened democracy'. The launch-debate will be next Friday (26), at 18 pm, in the Ipol auditorium.

The book – with a preface by 1980 Nobel Peace Prize laureate Pérez Esquivel – is a collection of chronicles against the institutional rupture represented by the impeachment of the legitimately elected president, Dilma Rousseff.

The work brings together reflections from 83 intellectuals, journalists, historians, artists, writers, and professionals from various fields—Brazilians from all corners of the country and from some corners of abroad. The back cover is signed by theologian and writer Leonardo Boff. The collection was organized by journalist Cleusa Slaviero and published by Editora ComPactos.

Considerations by Leonardo Boff

On the back cover of the book, the writer Leonardo Boff says that "strange things happen in the kingdom that is not Denmark, but Brazil: a president is removed for minor errors in financial administration, which occur in all governments throughout the world and which do not represent grounds for her removal simply because there is no proportionality between the eventual error and the maximum penalty. It is a pretext for something else," he says.

According to him, "recently, recordings between opposition leaders, namely from the PMDB and PSDB parties, and one of Petrobras' directors revealed that the real reason for the president's removal was not so much the alleged fiscal irresponsibility."

"The removal was necessary to end the investigation at Petrobras, the famous Lava Jato, which involved corrupt individuals not only from the PT, but from the main parties: ministers, senators, and opposition deputies. To escape prosecution and imprisonment, they needed to end that 'unbridled bleeding' (R. Jucá), which involved millions and millions of dollars, threatening politicians," he states.

According to the writer, "this is the shallow reason for the impeachment process against the President. As Noam Chomsky, who lives with a Brazilian woman, rightly said, it is 'a gang of thieves accusing an innocent woman, against whom there is not even evidence of a crime.' This gang joined forces with the mastermind, Vice President Michel Temer, with sectors of the Supreme Court itself, complicit and negligent, with the Federal Police and the Public Prosecutor's Office to escape unscathed from their crimes and save their political careers."

"The original and perverse intention was to destabilize the PT government, which they partly achieved, supported by a conservative and slanderous press, one of the most concentrated in the world. They sought to deconstruct Lula's charismatic figure. Regressive elites, nostalgic for the old plantation system, seek the power they lost in the elections and consider the rise of the poor in social and university life unacceptable," he adds.

Boff's accounts were only part of the text on the back cover of the book.

The event will feature authors Fernando Horta (historian), Letícia Sallorenzo (journalist), and Victor Sales Gorman (leader of the Academic Center for Social Work at UnB). The event will be moderated by professor and political scientist Luis Felipe Miguel, coordinator of the Democracy and Inequalities Research Group (Demode) at the Institute of Political Science at UnB. UBES Secretary-General Juliane Silva will also participate.
