Brazil's Superior Electoral Court (TSE) orders social media platforms to remove video containing fake news by councilman Nikolas Ferreira against Lula.
The social media platforms Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook have 24 hours to remove the fake news video recorded by Nikolas Ferreira.
Note from Lula's lawyers – Brazilian Supreme Electoral Court (TSE) Minister Paulo de Tarso Sanseverino ordered on Monday (October 10) the removal of a video full of fake news against former president and candidate Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. The video was recorded and posted by councilman Nikolas Ferreira. In addition to him, three other supporters of candidate Jair Bolsonaro posted the content: Senator Flávio Bolsonaro and Representatives Eduardo Bolsonaro and Carla Zambelli.
In the video, Nikolas Ferreira claims that Lula would encourage crime and drug use among children and teenagers, intend to censor social media, sponsor "genocidal dictatorships," close churches and promote the persecution of Christians, defend censorship and arrest citizens who took to the streets to demonstrate politically, and would also be in favor of abortion.
The social media platforms Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook have 24 hours to remove the fake news video recorded by Nikolas Ferreira. Minister Sanseverino has imposed a fine of R$ 50 for non-compliance with the decision.
"It must be acknowledged that the released video was produced to offend the honor and image of candidate Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. The objective was to disseminate manifestly false and hateful discourse intended to induce social media users to associate the candidate with the aforementioned illicit and immoral practices," the minister points out.
The decision was granted after the "Brazil of Hope" coalition, representing the Lula/Alckmin ticket, filed a lawsuit alleging that the video recorded by the city councilman contained several false news items, some of which had already been debunked by fact-checking agencies.
The Brazil of Hope Coalition is formed by the following parties: PT, PV, PCdoB, PSOL, REDE, PSB, Solidariedade, Avante, Agir, and Pros.
