247 - The first authority to be informed that Minister Teori Zavascki was on the plane that crashed in Paraty (RJ) on the afternoon of Thursday the 19th, the president of the Supreme Federal Court, Minister Cármen Lúcia, stated in a note that "consternation has taken over the Supreme Federal Court" with the news of the magistrate's death.
Cármen Lúcia had just landed in Belo Horizonte (MG), where she was going to visit her father, when she learned that the minister's name was on the plane's passenger list. She immediately returned to Brasília.
It is now up to the president of the Supreme Federal Court to decide how to choose the next rapporteur for the Lava Jato case: whether to draw lots to select the next rapporteur or wait for Michel Temer to nominate a new minister, who would automatically inherit all the cases left by Teori.

Consternation gripped the Supreme Federal Court on January 19th with the news of the death of one of the most brilliant judges who helped build the history of this Court and the country. Minister Teori Zavascki represents one of the high points in the history of our Justice system. His work will remain forever, and his presence and example will serve as a guiding light from which we will not deviate, knowing that people die, but their works and examples do not.
Death puts an end to a life, but it does not end friendship, the noble, kind, and fruitful companionship of a friend of friends. Nor does it end the generosity towards all that characterized Minister Teori Zavascki.
The feeling of pain and longing will serve as a permanent reminder of the commitments that marked the minister's life, a responsibility that rests on our shoulders, so that we may persevere, also in his honor, on the same path.
The Brazilian Supreme Court expresses its solidarity with the family of Justice Teori Zavascki and thanks everyone for the expressions of condolence received following his death.
