There are plenty of vasectomies available in Brasilia.

Men must be over 25 years old or have two living children to be eligible for the procedure; the surgery lasts only 45 minutes.

Brasilia Agency - Couples who no longer wish to have children, women who cannot take contraceptives, or who have health problems, can seek public health services and opt for other contraceptive methods offered by the SUS (Brazilian Public Health System) through the Family Planning program. One of these methods is vasectomy. Many men concerned about the well-being of their partners opt for vasectomy, since tubal ligation is a longer and more painful procedure, in addition to requiring hospitalization and prolonged rest.

In the General Health Coordination of Taguatinga, due to low demand for the procedure, vasectomies have unused slots every month. To qualify for the surgery, the couple must attend a family planning lecture at the health center closest to their home and receive all the information to decide when, how, and if they want to have children. Afterwards, a consultation is scheduled with a urologist who explains the surgery, risks, answers questions, addresses myths, and provides pre- and post-operative care. The vasectomy is performed approximately sixty days later.

The man must be over 25 years old or have two living children and be of sound mind. During the consultation with the urologist, candidates for vasectomy receive a document called an Informed Consent Form, which must be signed by the couple and notarized.

Joseph Monteiro Carvalho, the urologist responsible for the vasectomy program in Taguatinga, emphasizes that the decision to undergo surgery should be made jointly. There is a chance of reversal, but the cost is high and the process is lengthy. "The biggest problem with vasectomy is regret," says Joseph.

Vasectomy is a low-complexity surgery, performed in approximately 45 minutes, under local anesthesia. The patient does not need to be hospitalized and leaves the hospital on the same day as the surgery, but physical and sexual rest is necessary. It is important to note that after a vasectomy, the man continues to have a normal sex life. The sterilization result is 100% effective.
