Senate approves core text of bill postponing election to November.
The vote still needs to be completed in the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies. If the constitutional amendment is approved, the elections will be moved from October to November.
247 - The Plenary approved on Tuesday night (23), in a remote session, a proposed amendment to the Constitution (PEC nº 18/2020) that postpones the municipal elections from October to November. Senators are now analyzing amendments to the proposal.
According to the electoral calendar, the elections will be held on October 4th and 25th. If the proposal is approved, the election will take place on the 15th (first round) and 29th (second round).
The reason for the postponement is the coronavirus pandemic. The text was approved by 67 votes to 8 (two abstentions). Senators are now analyzing amendments to the proposal.
Because it is a Proposed Constitutional Amendment, the text still needs to be submitted to a second round of voting, which should happen later this Tuesday. If approved in the second round, the PEC will proceed to the Chamber of Deputies.
