Water rationing in Brasília reaches Asa Norte and Noroeste.
Water supply was interrupted this Tuesday (28) in Asa Norte, Vila Planalto and Noroeste, in Brasília; the rotation in the localities supplied by the Santa Maria Reservoir began this Monday (27) in the Federal District; only public hospitals and the Esplanada dos Ministérios will not be subject to rationing.
Water supply was interrupted this Tuesday (28) in Asa Norte, Vila Planalto and Noroeste, in Brasília. The rotation in the localities supplied by the Santa Maria Reservoir started yesterday (27) in the Federal District. Only public hospitals and the Esplanada dos Ministérios will not be included in the rationing.
According to the Environmental Sanitation Company of the Federal District (Caesb), the alternating schedule will work with one day without water supply (starting at 8 am), two days to reconnect and stabilize the system, and three days of normalized supply. The scheme will be the same as that applied in the regions that receive water from the Descoberto River Dam, which have been under rationing since January.
The measure is a result of limitations on water intake from the Descoberto and Santa Maria-Torto systems, determined by the Regulatory Agency for Water, Energy and Basic Sanitation of the Federal District (Adasa). The low level of the reservoirs, which should be above 60% capacity, justifies the decision; this minimum volume is necessary to avoid water shortages during the dry season in the capital.
According to the latest measurement by Adasa, the Santa Maria reservoir was yesterday (27) at 46,5% of its capacity, and the Descoberto River Dam, at 40,41%. According to the Federal District government, rationing will remain in effect until there is water security in the region.
Santa Maria is responsible for supplying water to 24% of Brasília's population, including Plano Piloto, the city's central region where the federal government buildings are located. The areas served by the system had already been experiencing reduced water pressure since January 30th.
The regions supplied by the Descoberto system have been under rationing since January 16th. The reservoir is responsible for 65% of the total water production of the Federal District and reaches approximately 1,8 million people.
