247 - The Minister of Human Rights, Silvio Luiz de Almeida, gave a lesson on impartiality to federal deputy Eduardo Bolsonaro (PL-SP). In a speech in the Chamber of Deputies, the minister was questioned by the parliamentarian about the possibility of awarding the minister a Luiz Gama prize – Almeida was president of the Luiz Gama Institute, an entity honoring the abolitionist (1830-1882). Almeida clarified that he could not put into practice the deputy's suggestion because Eduardo's proposal would violate impartiality.

Still in his response, the minister made a comparison and suggested that the Princess Isabel Medal, created during Jair Bolsonaro's government, was a different story. Princess Isabel signed the Golden Law, which prohibited slavery, on May 13, 1888. But, in this case, Almeida warned about the misuse of purpose by the Bolsonaro administration in creating the medal.

"What would break the impartiality of the Award, from a legal point of view, would be me awarding myself the Luiz Gama Award. Besides being ridiculous on my part, it would be a breach of impartiality. The Princess Isabel Medal, on the other hand, was awarded to those who created it, themselves. My predecessor, in what was the old ministry, received the medal (Damares Alves). After her, the former president (Jair Bolsonaro) and the former first lady (Michelle Bolsonaro)," he stated.

The Lula government revoked the Princess Isabel medal this year. "In the name of Princess Isabel, the best thing we did for her memory was to abolish this medal. And you can be sure, this will not happen. Neither I nor President Lula will receive the Luiz Gama Prize while we are in government," declared the minister.
