The defense team for federal deputy João Paulo Cunha (PT) has requested authorization from the Federal District's Criminal Enforcement Court for him to leave the Papuda Prison during the day to carry out his mandate; he also wants authorization to attend law school. Cunha is serving an initial sentence of six years and four months in prison under a semi-open regime for the crimes of corruption and embezzlement.

The defense of federal deputy João Paulo Cunha (PT-SP) requested authorization from the Federal District's Criminal Execution Court (VEP) to leave the Papuda Prison, in the Federal District, during the day to exercise his mandate. Cunha was arrested on Tuesday (4) to serve his sentence in Criminal Action 470, the mensalão trial, but decided not to resign from his position.
According to the petition filed with the Federal District Court, the congressman also wants permission to leave prison to continue his law studies. Cunha is serving an initial sentence of six years and four months in a semi-open prison regime for the crimes of corruption and embezzlement.
After being notified by the STF about the arrest, the Board of Directors of the Chamber of Deputies scheduled a meeting for next Wednesday (12) to decide whether the process to revoke João Paulo Cunha's mandate will be opened.
