Possible cartel under investigation in Brasilia.

The Ministry of Justice suspects irregularities in the fuel market in the Federal District; those involved could face fines of up to R$ 6 million.

Brasilia 247 - Alleged irregularities in the distribution and resale of fuel in the Federal District will be investigated by the Economic Law Secretariat of the Ministry of Justice. The agency sees the possibility of cartel formation. Those involved may face investigation proceedings and fines of up to R$ 6 million.

The information was collected between January 2005 and April 2011. Among the evidence found is the delay in passing on price reductions at gas stations to consumers. The high profit margins on fuel resale and distribution, especially ethanol, also contribute to the suspicion.

The fuel union stated that it has not yet been notified. The Federal District has 313 gas stations, of which 214 are part of the union.
