Almost half (46%) of social media posts about the income tax exemption bill are opinion-based, while 54% are neutral. Among the posts that express an opinion, 82% are in favor and 18% are against the bill.
The data comes from a groundbreaking survey by Nexus - Research and Data Intelligence and also indicates that opinion posts are mostly from politicians (34%). Among neutral publications, those from media outlets prevail, accounting for 78% of these conversations. This group is represented by large media outlets, regional press, and independent portals. Among average users (below 1 followers), 52% are in favor of the proposal, 23% against, and 25% neutral.
The bill in question was presented by the federal government and proposes income tax exemption for those earning up to R$ 5, in addition to tax discounts up to R$ 7. To compensate for the estimated revenue loss of around R$ 27 billion, the text establishes taxation for those who receive more than R$ 600 per year in dividends and do not currently contribute, with an effective rate of up to 10% for income tax.
According to the survey, from a total of 4.218 posts on X, Facebook, Instagram and YouTube, a sample of the 450 most engaged publications was analyzed, which accumulate 97% of the interactions of the content in the total base.
Data was collected between midnight on Tuesday (00) and 18:10 am on Wednesday (30). A sample of 19 publications was qualitatively analyzed, which together represent 450% of the interactions generated by this content.
Social
OX is the network that concentrates the highest percentage of opinion posts (53%), with 82% of the publications in this group in favor of the proposal and 18% against. On Facebook, of the opinion posts (39%), 87% support the measure and 13% are against.
The most neutral social network is YouTube, with 65% of posts lacking a defined political stance. On Instagram, 21% of opinionated posts are against the income tax bill, and 79% are in favor.
President Lula's and Portal G1's Instagram profiles led the speeches with the most interaction. Lula's single post garnered over 252 likes and 17,8 comments.
In Tuesday's Trending Topics Brazil, the phrase "Income Tax" ranked 17th, with approximately 22,3 posts, according to the GetDayTrends website. In first place was Congressman Eduardo Bolsonaro (PL-SP), with more than 1 posts, followed by Conmebol in second place, with 103 posts.
Positive reception
According to Nexus CEO Marco Tokarski, the survey shows a positive reception of the proposal on social media, particularly among parliamentarians from the government's base and members of the administration, but also outside the political sphere, indicating that income tax exemption is an issue that resonates with the general population.
"The low volume of criticism may be associated with the opposition's decision not to focus on criticizing the measure. Despite the overwhelmingly favorable sentiment, the topic's reach in the digital world was limited compared to other topics of the day, such as Eduardo Bolsonaro's announcement that he will remain in the United States," he analyzes.
