Paulo Pimenta says that Lula is conducting his business normally from his office in the Planalto Palace.
The Minister of the Secretariat of Social Communication (Secom) says that the terrorist attack in Brazil was more serious than the one that occurred in the Capitol.
Brazil Agency – The Minister of the Secretariat of Communication (Secom) of the Presidency of the Republic, Paulo Pimenta, classified this Monday (9) the invasion and depredation of the headquarters of the three branches of government, yesterday in Brasília, as more serious than what happened in the Capitol, in the United States, two years ago. “The episode that occurred in Brazil is more serious than what occurred in the Capitol. What we had there was an attempt to invade the headquarters of the Legislative Branch and here we witnessed the invasion of the headquarters of the Three Branches of Government,” said the minister.
In a demonstration that democracy is working, Pimenta stated that President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva decided to work from the Planalto Palace today. The destruction of offices in the buildings of the three branches of government did not affect Lula's office, which has a bulletproof door. According to Pimenta, the president of the Supreme Federal Court (STF), Rosa Weber, whose office was also unaffected, is expected to do the same.
Facilitation
In a conversation with journalists today, the minister also said that nothing that happened in Brasília yesterday could have occurred "without some level of facilitation." "The main door wasn't broken, therefore people entered through that door. The door at the National Congress wasn't damaged either. You can see that at the Supreme Federal Court the door was destroyed. Which leads me to believe, obviously, and the investigations will have to demonstrate this, that they could have entered here [Planalto Palace] and at the National Congress through the main door," he stated.
Pimenta added that there was a foiled coup attempt. "For us, what happened here was not an act against the Executive Branch, it was against democracy, against the Federal Constitution. It was an attempted coup d'état, which did not succeed."
In a new assessment of Sunday's terrorist acts, orchestrated by supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro, Paulo Pimenta highlighted that blood, feces, and urine were found throughout the Planalto Palace and that works of art were also destroyed. "Those who saw it said it looked like a bunch of hateful, out-of-control people, like a bunch of zombies. They ran through the corridors, broke everything, urinated, defecated in the corridors, inside the rooms. It was an act of destruction," the minister emphasized.
Pimenta also said that those involved need to be held immediately accountable, both civilly and criminally, for everything that happened. According to him, there will be a process to identify everyone who supported, financed, and participated in the acts in Brasília and other states. "We will not tolerate any act that aims to weaken democracy and the Constitution."
