Pacheco responds to Cida Gonçalves and says that the Senate is not 'considering a step backward' in the abortion debate.
The minister stated that, with the new composition of the Senate, there is a high chance of defeat in attempts to advance discussions on abortion.
247 - The president of the Federal Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG), issued a statement in response to the Minister for Women, Aparecida Gonçalves, stating that there has never been "the slightest consideration of regression in the legal provisions" regarding abortion in the House.
In interview with Folha de S. PaulThe minister said that with the new composition of Congress – with a strong conservative and Bolsonaro-supporting presence – there is a high chance of defeat in attempts to advance the debate on abortion. "As things stand today in Congress and as the Senate is convening it, any discussion about abortion will result in more losses than gains."
Pacheco states that Cida's statement is a "prejudgment" of Congress. "And regarding abortion, there is not and never has been the slightest consideration of a regression in legal provisions. Therefore, it is important for the ministry to propose its policies and ideas and not prejudge Congress. This week I will send a list of matters approved by this Congress in the last two years in favor of women, and I will be ready to receive suggestions from the ministry. Never before has so much been done in defense of women, including through the leadership of the women's caucus, which I created in 2021."
Despite the arguments presented by Pacheco, the National Congress does indeed show strong resistance to abortion.
