Free buses and metro in the Federal District total 2,5 million uses during Carnival.
Increased demand for public transportation, a reinforced fleet, and smooth operation mark the start of the "Vai de Graça" program.
247 - The Federal District ended Carnival 2025 with significant movement in public transportation, thanks to the "Vai de Graça" program, which offers free bus and metro rides. According to information from... Brasilia Agency, more than 2,5 million accesses were recorded between Saturday (1st) and Tuesday (4th), an increase of 46,5% compared to the same period in 2024.
To accommodate the new demand, there was an increase in trips and an addition of 90 vehicles throughout the four days of festivities, raising the average from 1.708 vehicles in 2024 to 1.934 in 2025. The Brasília Metro also extended its operating hours until 1 a.m. at the Central Station, ensuring that revelers could count on free transportation after the Carnival celebrations.
Monday saw the highest volume of passengers, with 770.364 departures on round-trip journeys. However, the largest percentage increase occurred on Sunday, rising from 260.481 departures in 2024 to 491.985 in 2025, an increase of approximately 89%.
The Secretary of Transportation and Mobility of the Federal District, Zeno Gonçalves, highlighted the importance of the program in expanding access to events and leisure venues. “We had much higher than normal traffic for a Carnival period, and the system worked very well. Demand increased because, in addition to the Carnival festivities, people who previously didn't travel because they couldn't afford transportation for their families on weekends can now go for walks, explore Brasília's public spaces, attend religious events, fairs, and shops.”
According to the secretary, there were no incidents of crime or vandalism on public transport vehicles during Carnival. He believes the result proves the system's ability to handle the increased passenger flow, reinforcing the peace of mind and safety for those who chose to travel by bus and subway.
