After Jair Bolsonaro said he was infected with Covid-19 and, even so, downplayed the effects of the pandemic, data released by the General Secretariat of the Presidency of the Republic indicated more than 100 people infected with the coronavirus in the Planalto Palace.
247 The General Secretariat of the Presidency of the Republic reported that, out of 3.400 presidential employees, 108 were infected with the coronavirus as of July 3rd, equivalent to 3,8% of the workforce.
The information was released by the secretariat after Jair Bolsonaro stated that he was infected due to Covid-19. In addition to committing numerous crimes of responsibility by encouraging gatherings, Bolsonaro even went so far as to say that wearing a mask is "faggot stuff".
After saying he had been infected, Bolsonaro once again downplayed the impacts of Covid-19. "The most important precautions are for the elderly, but there's no need to panic with everyone else." he said, which had classified the coronavirus as a "little flu", in March, and asked "So what?" when questioned about the five thousand deaths from the disease in April.
In a statement, the ministry said "that it is adopting the recommended measures to combat the new coronavirus, in order to ensure that the work environment at the Presidency of the Republic is always as safe as possible for all employees."
According to the Worldometers platform, which provides global coronavirus statistics, Brazil ranks second in the world in confirmed cases (1,6 million) and deaths (66,8), behind only the United States, with 3 million cases and 133 deaths caused by the disease.
