Lindbergh points to a "failed attempt" by the defense and calls for Bolsonaro's preventive detention.

Lawyers had suggested to the Supreme Court that the far-right politician was unaware of the limits of the court order prohibiting him from granting interviews.

247 - The PT leader in the Chamber of Deputies, Lindbergh Farias (RJ), requested on Tuesday (22) the preventive detention of Jair Bolsonaro (PL) so as not to hinder the investigations of the coup plot. The parliamentarian criticized the allegations made by the former president's defense. Lawyers had suggested to the Supreme Federal Court that the far-right politician was unaware of the limits of the order issued by the STF not to grant interviews. The Court determined precautionary measures due to the risk of fleeing abroad and due to obstruction of justice in the investigation.

Defendant in the investigation of the coup plot, the former president gave an interview and displayed his electronic ankle monitor, two actions prohibited by the Supreme Court. "The defense's claim is a futile attempt to create confusion where there is evident intent," stated Lindbergh. "Justice cannot be fooled. The conduct reveals contempt for judicial authority and reinforces the need for more severe measures, especially preventive detention," he added.

“Jair Bolsonaro’s defense claims he was unaware of the Supreme Court’s decision prohibiting interviews broadcast on social media, including those of third parties. But this is not true: even before the PL press conference, a congressman from his own party clearly told the press that Jair Bolsonaro would not speak on the advice of his lawyers, precisely because of the decision by Justice Alexandre de Moraes, which he called 'censorship',” he continued.

As the Workers' Party member pointed out, Bolsonaro "knew" about the precautionary measures "and everyone around him did too." "Even so, minutes later, he gave a speech as he left the Chamber of Deputies that was immediately published on his son Eduardo Bolsonaro's social media, blatantly and premeditatedly violating the imposed measure. It wasn't a 'random' repost: it was a coordinated family action."

Coup plot and the USA

The Brazilian Federal Police are investigating the former president for obstruction of justice as a consequence of his dealings with the government of US President Donald Trump. The White House chief announced this month tariffs of 50% on Brazilian exports and cited the legal action against Bolsonaro as justification for initiating the trade war. The US has also opened a trade investigation against Brazil.

President Lula strongly criticized the 50% tariff adopted by the United States and stated that the Brazilian government will adopt measures in response, based on the provisions of the Economic Reciprocity Law.

The regulation authorizes Brazil to react to unilateral foreign actions that harm its international competitiveness, allowing, among other measures, the termination of trade agreements, the imposition of barriers to foreign investment, and the suspension of obligations related to intellectual property.

Precautionary measures

The Brazilian Supreme Court (STF) has established new precautionary measures against Bolsonaro, motivated by suspicions of attempted flight from the country and possible actions to obstruct the progress of investigations into the attempted coup d'état.

Among the restrictions imposed is an absolute ban on using social media, either directly or through third parties. Bolsonaro was also subjected to a house arrest regime: he must remain at home every night from 19 pm to 6 am on weekdays, and full-time on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays.

Another ruling by the Supreme Federal Court (STF) prevents the former head of the Executive branch from frequenting diplomatic missions, such as embassies and consulates, and also prohibits any type of contact with diplomats or international authorities.
