48-hour strike at UnB

Professors and staff from the University of Brasília Foundation joined the movement; the professors' objective is to discuss the restructuring of their career paths.

Brasilia 247 – A new teachers' strike has begun in the Federal District. This time, it is the professors at UnB (University of Brasília) who have decided to down tools. The Union of Workers of the University of Brasília Foundation (SINTFUB) has also joined the movement, which began on Tuesday the 24th. The strike is expected to continue on Wednesday the 25th.

University of Brasília staff are demanding compliance with an agreement made in November 2011, which guaranteed a 4% salary increase for professors at federal public universities. According to the University of Brasília Teachers' Association (ADUnB), if the government does not meet the demands, there will be another strike on May 9th and 10th. "We need to discuss the teaching career and the professor's salary," justifies the association's president, Ebnezer Nogueira. Last week, an ADUnB opinion poll revealed that 61% of professors are in favor of a strike on May 15th.

SINTFUB also demands compliance with the agreement signed with the government. "Last year's strike was avoided, but if they don't comply with the agreement, we will hold another strike," assures union leader Mauro Mendes. At the University Restaurant, 50% of the staff did not work this Tuesday.

A meeting of civil servants is scheduled for this Wednesday, the 25th, in front of the Planalto Palace.
