Bolsonaro government threatens legal action against quarantine and social isolation measures.

According to André Mendonça, the Attorney General of the Union, restrictive measures to combat the spread of the coronavirus should be preventive and educational, and not for "repressive, authoritarian, or arbitrary" purposes.

Bolsonaro announces André Luiz de Almeida Mendonça to head the Attorney General's Office.

Sputnik – The Attorney General of the Union, André Mendonça, published a note this Saturday (11) stating that the government is considering taking legal action against isolation measures adopted by municipal and state authorities.

According to Mendonça, restrictive measures to combat the spread of the coronavirus should be preventive and educational, and not "repressive, authoritarian, or arbitrary."

"Isolated measures, arrests of citizens, and restrictions not based on technical standards issued by the Ministry of Health and Anvisa pave the way for abuse and arbitrariness," says the statement, quoted by G1.

The statement from the Attorney General of the Union comes after the governor of São Paulo, João Doria (PSDB), declared that he would evaluate stricter quarantine measures, including applying fines and imprisonment, if adherence to isolation in the state of São Paulo did not reach 60% of the population this weekend.

Previously, Supreme Federal Court (STF) Justice Alexandre de Moraes ruled that the federal government cannot overturn decisions made by states and municipalities regarding social isolation, quarantine, educational activities, restrictions on commerce, and the movement of people.
