Coup attempt: PL says election report only aims for a second round to avoid 'major turmoil'
Valdemar Costa Neto schedules a new press conference, but instead of answering questions, he makes contradictory and ambiguous statements, saying that irregularities were found in the second round of voting.
247 - In a press conference this Wednesday (23), the national president of the PL, Valdemar Costa Neto, said that the report presented by Jair Bolsonaro's party asking for the invalidation of the presidential election result only audited the second round to "avoid great turmoil".
Extending the verification process to the first round would be a "hasty" measure, argued Valdemar Costa Neto, who on Tuesday had refused to answer journalists' questions. Today, he agreed to answer, but his explanations were ambiguous and contradictory.
Valdemar justified the request sent to the TSE (Superior Electoral Court) to annul votes cast in 279 electronic voting machines by saying that the Electoral Law allows questioning if there are "indications" of errors or problems in the electoral system – not necessarily proof. When questioned by journalists if the request was for the annulment of the elections, Valdemar denied it, adding that the Electoral Court would have to carry out the investigation. However, The Liberal Party (PL) claimed on Tuesday that Bolsonaro had received 50,05% of the vote.
"It's not about asking for another election, that doesn't make sense. It's a matter that involves millions of people. Because a citizen who got 200 votes has to participate in the process [...] So it's crazy, the PL alone had 2 candidates. I imagine the other parties did too. And besides affecting governors and senators," he stated.
Regarding Moraes' decision, which demanded evidence within 24 hours also related to the first round, the president of the PL argues that the Court should accept the initial petition and, if any irregularity is found, the party will then verify the first round.
