Gleisi makes a "formal invitation" to the MDB to join the transition and says she wants the party's support in Congress.

The president of the PT (Workers' Party) stated that forming a bloc in the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate is a decision for the parliamentarians to make, but acknowledged: "obviously we want to count on the support of the MDB (Brazilian Democratic Movement)."

247 - The president of the PT, federal deputy Gleisi Hoffmann (PR), and the president of the MDB, federal deputy Baleia Rossi (SP), met this Tuesday (8) in Brasília and gave a press conference afterwards. The PT member stated that she had formally invited the MDB to join the transition team of the new government federal.

"I came here to formally invite the MDB to join us – I had already made this invitation informally, but I came to formalize it – in the transition process. We believe it is very important to have the parties formally, institutionally, involved in this process. We will present it soon." one name from ten political parties that are with us"Those who were involved during the electoral process, in the first round and also in the second round, including the PDT. And we would very much like the MDB to participate in this political council of the transition government, so that we can discuss programmatic issues, what lies ahead, the difficulties we may face, and so on. This is without prejudice to the nomination of technicians and people who can help us in the transition working groups. We would have 32 working groups, if I'm not mistaken, in which we have to make a diagnosis of the government, and it is very important that the political parties that were with us and are with us participate from now on. So I came to formally extend this invitation to Congressman Baleia. He said he would talk to the party, but I felt a great willingness to move forward together. For the good of Brazil, for the reconstruction of the country, for the normalization of politics, I think we also have to create this governmental unity," said Gleisi.

>>> Lula's economic transition team includes Persio, Lara Resende, Barbosa, and Mello; a faction within the PT is considering inviting Mantega.

Rossi stated that he will meet with MDB leaders to decide whether or not to accept the invitation. The MDB's participation in the transition team is already considered a certainty, and consulting other party members is merely a formality.

The name of the MDB that will be part of the transition team should be announced by this Wednesday (9). "I believe the MDB is the most democratic party in Brazil. We have regional differences, we have great leaders, and everyone will be consulted and will participate in this decision. There is a very strong collaborative spirit in the MDB. I have already had conversations and I am convinced that the MDB will be participating in these discussions. I made some points to President Gleisi, mainly regarding some issues that are dear to the MDB, such as tax reform. It is one of the issues we have been working on for the last three years; there is already an advanced report. Of course, there can and should be changes, but I think it is an issue that resonates with society, especially President Lula's proposals to generate jobs, income, and improve the business environment, to make our economy grow again. Regarding the federal pact, we have a very great concern for states and municipalities that, due to various measures that have been taken, are suffering from a lack of resources. I reaffirmed the points, which were suggestions from Simone Tebet to President Lula in the second round, in the areas of Education, Health, and policies for..." "Women, in a pluralistic government. Therefore, I believe that the MDB can greatly help with the agenda, which is a convergent agenda. It's not a decision I'll make alone. The MDB doesn't have an owner; it's a party with many leaders, and I'll talk to each one. I can say in advance that I see a very strong collaborative spirit within the party. I believe we'll have this decision by tomorrow."

Bloc in Congress

The leaders were asked about the possible creation of a parliamentary bloc between the PT and MDB parties in the National Congress.

Rossi said that the formation of the bloc will depend on the party leaders in the Chamber and Senate, but said he views the possibility as 'natural'. "This is a discussion that will take place within the party caucuses. Our leader, Isnaldo Bulhões (MDB-AL), is a very active deputy here in the Chamber and this formation of blocs will happen naturally, but through the leadership of the caucuses, both in the Chamber and in the Senate."

Gleisi made it clear that the new government of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) wants to count on the support of the MDB in the Legislature. "It's a discussion that belongs to the National Congress. Obviously, we would like, and want as a government, to count on the support of the MDB in the governance process, that's for sure."
