The minister denounced lies by Jair Bolsonaro, a defendant in the investigation into the coup plot.
247 - The Minister-Chief of the Secretariat of Institutional Relations (SRI), Gleisi Hoffmann, published this Monday (21) a message of support for the Minister of the Supreme Federal Court Alexandre de Moraes, who determined some precautionary measures against Jair Bolsonaro (PL), defendant in the investigation of the coup plot.
“Minister Alexandre de Moraes’ decisions show the Bolsonaros and other traitors that in Brazil, justice must be obeyed. Jair Bolsonaro cannot defy the ban on using social media to lie, and Eduardo Bolsonaro cannot continue acting with impunity against the country from the USA. They need to learn to respect the law!” wrote the head of the SRI on social media.
The Brazilian Supreme Court (STF) has ordered a series of precautionary measures against Jair Bolsonaro for obstruction of justice and risk of fleeing abroad. Justice Moraes gave the former president's defense 24 hours to explain the alleged violations. failure to comply with precautionary measuresThe judge warned that if the lawyers do not respond within the stipulated time, he may immediately order Bolsonaro's arrest, as provided for in article 312, §1, of the Code of Criminal Procedure.
Some precautionary measures included the suspension of their activities on digital platforms – prohibiting not only direct publications, but also messages transmitted through intermediaries.
In addition to the ban on social media, the former president is subject to a special house arrest regime: during weekdays, he must remain at his residence during the night (from 19 pm to 6 am). On Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays, the restriction extends for all 24 hours of the day.
The measures, decreed in the context of the inquiry into the alleged attempt to subvert the democratic order, represent a tightening of the conditions imposed on the former head of the Executive branch.
The far-right politician is accused of five crimes in the Supreme Court's investigation into the coup plot. The combined sentences amount to more than 40 years in prison.
Eduardo Bolsonaro
Minister Alexandre de Moraes ordered the freezing of bank accounts and assets belonging to Eduardo Bolsonaro (PL-SP). The congressman is prohibited from making financial transactions, including receiving cash donations via Pix from his father, Jair Bolsonaro, to fund his stay in the United States.
According to the former president himself, around R$ 2 million has already been sent to Eduardo. In March of this year, the congressman requested leave from his mandate and went to live in the United States, alleging political persecution. The leave ended on Sunday (20). The congressman has already said that he will not resign.
According to the internal regulations of the Chamber of Deputies, the congressman could be expelled for absences due to his failure to return to Brazil. He is being investigated by the Supreme Federal Court (STF) for inciting the US government to take measures against the Brazilian government and the STF as a result of the criminal proceedings related to the coup plot, in which Bolsonaro is one of the defendants.
The Trump administration and BRICS
Investigators are looking into alleged obstruction of justice and flight risk on the part of Jair Bolsonaro due to his dealings with the government of US President Donald Trump. This month, the White House chief announced a 50% tariff increase on Brazilian exports, citing the coup plot as justification for initiating a trade war.
Brazilian Supreme Court justices, politicians, and activists from the progressive camp denounce the US government's initiative as a violation of Brazilian national sovereignty. President Lula stated that Brazil will respond to the US with the Economic Reciprocity Act and is also betting on expanding other markets, such as those that are part of BRICS.
Analysts highlighted that the expansion of BRICS was another reason for the tariffs announced by Trump in a letter addressed to President Lula on July 9th.
Emerging as a counterforce to US unilateralism, the BRICS group has significantly deepened collaborative ties between developing countries. Statistics compiled by ComexVis demonstrate the bloc's magnitude: it concentrates almost two-fifths of the global economy (39% of GDP in PPP), participates with a quarter of international trade, and encompasses more than a third of the Earth's continental surface.
The conglomerate's supremacy extends to strategic resources: it controls an impressive 72% of the world's rare earth deposits – vital elements for cutting-edge technological industries. In the energy sector, according to data from the International Energy Agency, the BRICS dominate significant portions of world production: it accounts for 43,6% of extracted crude oil, 36% of available natural gas, and an impressive 78,2% of globally consumed coal.
