Gilmar says the trial of the Dilma-Temer ticket will be historic.

"This process is extremely important, historic, but regardless of the outcome. Ultimately, what is being investigated? A way of doing politics that we hope will remain in the past. More than the importance of the result—impeachment, confirmation, dismissal, or acceptance—what's important is that there is this historical document about how campaigns were conducted in Brazil. And in this case, a quite authentic portrait because we are talking about a presidential campaign, a winning presidential campaign. That's what seems relevant to me," said Minister Gilmar Mendes, who may bring the impeachment of Michel Temer to the table.

The president of the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) and minister of the Supreme Federal Court, Gilmar Mendes, spoke this Thursday (23) about the importance of the trial in the electoral court regarding the annulment of the Dilma Rousseff and Michel Temer ticket in the 2014 elections.

The rapporteur for the case at the TSE (Superior Electoral Court), Minister Herman Benjamin, scheduled the testimony of three Odebrecht whistleblowers, including businessman Marcelo Odebrecht, for right after Carnival, on Ash Wednesday, March 1st. The testimony will be given as a witness in the lawsuits seeking the annulment of the ticket.

Gilmar Mendes believes the trial will conclude this year and assessed that, regardless of the outcome, the process is considered historic.

"This process is extremely important, historic, but regardless of the outcome, what is being investigated at its core? A way of doing politics that we hope will remain in the past. More than the importance of the result—impeachment, confirmation, dismissal, or acceptance—what's important is that there is this historical document about how campaigns were conducted in Brazil. And in this case, a fairly authentic portrait because we're talking about a presidential campaign, a winning presidential campaign. That's what seems relevant to me."

Despite the optimism of the president of the Superior Electoral Court to resolve the case in 2017, for the lawyers of the parties involved, the hearings could drag out the process, since depending on the testimonies of the informants, the defense will want to rebut the accusations.

If the Dilma/Temer ticket is annulled, President Michel Temer will have to leave office and the National Congress will hold indirect elections.
