MBL founders want distance from convicted Bolsonaro and are targeting a new party seen as fascist.

Linked to the Brazilian right wing, the Free Brazil Movement supported the 2016 coup and promoted an agenda of attacks against minorities.

247 - Founders of the Free Brazil Movement (MBL) have signaled a distance from the Bolsonaro family while awaiting a decision from the Superior Electoral Court (TSE). Founded in 2014, the MBL is linked to the Brazilian far-right and supported the 2016 coup against President Dilma Rousseff, encouraging the spread of hatred against women and the poorest citizens.

The group also supports the implementation of neoliberal policies that, in practice, have withdrawn public investment and social rights.

One of the founders of the MBL, current federal deputy Kim Kataguiri (União-SP), stated that in 2026 he will not support a candidate nominated by former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL), who was sentenced to 27 years in prison in the investigation into the Bolsonaro coup plot.

"The Bolsonaro family is a hegemonic power project that is only concerned with itself. It is not concerned with the country," the congressman said in an interview with... BBC News

The name of the political party that MBL founders could create is "Mission." In September, businessman Renan Santos (Mission Party) stated that, if elected president of the Republic, one of the party's main proposals is "to end organized crime," drawing inspiration from dictators like Nayib Bukele of El Salvador.

"On my first day in office, I won't even receive the presidential sash. We'll get on a plane, meet with the security forces, and begin taking over the first favela," he said, according to a report from... Band News

Flirting with fascism

The MBL supported the coup against Dilma, who was acquitted of any alleged fiscal crimes committed against her popular mandate. The institutional rupture favored the rise of Michel Temer (MDB) to the presidency (2016-2018) and Bolsonaro (2019-2022).

During the two neoliberal governments, a Spending Cap was implemented to freeze public investments and social rights, supposedly in the name of fiscal adjustment to attract private financiers.

In addition to the paralysis in public investment, attacks on Black people, women, LGBT people, Indigenous people, and the poorest population were the main hallmarks of the two administrations in Brazil in the social field.

Progressive leaders have consistently denounced the fascist practices of the Bolsonaro government, mainly because the far-right politician has previously defended the Military Dictatorship (1964-1985). In 2024, President Lula recreated the Special Commission on Political Deaths and Disappearances (CEMDP).

The decree reinstated the commission under the same conditions as when it was created in 1995, and was a demand from family members of victims of the dictatorship since the beginning of the current president's third term.

The so-called "Mission Party" would be officially recognized in the Brazilian party system as the 30th official party. The vast majority are right-wing or far-right. The MBL began collecting signatures in 2023 and intends to run in next year's elections.
