247 - Minister Edson Fachin was sworn in to the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) this Tuesday, the 22nd, replacing Luís Roberto Barroso. He will remain until August, when his two-year term on the electoral court ends, and will be replaced by Minister Alexandre de Moraes, who assumed the vice-presidency of the electoral court this Tuesday.

The invited officials participated via video link due to the pandemic, but Jair Bolsonaro (PL) declined to participate. Bolsonaro, who recently renewed his attacks on the Superior Electoral Court (TSE), electronic voting machines, and Supreme Court justices, claimed he had a busy schedule and could therefore not attend the inauguration of the new TSE president. However, minutes before the ceremony began, he chatted with supporters.

In his inaugural speech, Fachin sent a message to Bolsonaro. He emphasized that among the challenges of his administration is protecting "the truth about the integrity of Brazilian elections" and guaranteeing respect for the results of the polls.

"Brazil deserves better. The electoral court cries out for respect. And it warns: it will not surrender. Upholding the Constitution of the Republic is mandatory for everyone: Brazil is a 'fraternal, pluralistic and unprejudiced society, founded on social harmony and committed, in the internal and international order, to the peaceful resolution of controversies'," said the minister.

"The second challenge is to strengthen elections themselves, which, as we know, are the fundamental tool not only for ensuring that leaders are chosen by the sovereign people, but also for ensuring that political differences are resolved peacefully through popular choice. Democracy is, and always has been, non-negotiable," the minister said.

He also highlighted the negative effects of the spread of fake news. "Disinformation isn't just about the systematic distortion of the truth, that is, the normalization of lies. Disinformation goes further and also involves the use of bots and fake accounts, mass messaging, and, ultimately, all forms of inauthentic behavior in the digital world. It also involves the calculated insistence on fictitious doubts, as well as the flood of narratives produced to saturate the marketplace of ideas, increasing the costs of accessing adequate information," Fachin said.
