The Health Department recorded 1.472 cases of mumps in the Federal District in 2016, up to August 13th. Of these, 54 were considered outbreaks, affecting residents of 13 administrative regions, with 29 occurring in schools, 16 in homes, three in workplaces, one in the Papuda Penitentiary Complex, and five in other locations. This information is available from... Epidemiological Bulletin No. 9, released this Monday (22) by the Epidemiological Surveillance Management.
Most of those infected are male (846) and are in the 20-49 age range (669 cases). In absolute numbers — without considering the proportion of inhabitants in relation to the number of sick people — Ceilândia has the highest concentration of cases (283), followed by Taguatinga (163) and São Sebastião (129). When the incidence is calculated taking into account the rate per 100 residents, the administrative regions with the most occurrences are the Industrial and Supply Sector (SIA), Varjão and São Sebastião.
In order to minimize the spread of the virus, the Epidemiological Surveillance monitors all suspected cases and carries out selective vaccination blocking. That is, it immunizes people who have had contact with those infected. In case of an outbreak, patients are isolated for 10 to 15 days after the onset of symptoms and advised to adopt a series of recommendations, such as not sharing cups and cutlery, avoiding crowds and enclosed spaces, and adopting a balanced diet.
How to avoid mumps
The most effective way to prevent mumps is the MMR vaccine (mumps, measles, and rubella). Immunization should be given to children at 12 months of age. At 15 months, the MMRV vaccine (mumps, measles, rubella, and varicella) is administered. For children and adolescents up to 19 years old, two doses are given. For people between 20 and 49 years old, only one dose of the MMR vaccine is necessary. Vaccines are available year-round at all health centers.
